EU - EUROPEAN UNION
Since 1 January 2022, the European Union has entered a new era in organic legislation.
Organic production and certification are now regulated under Regulation (EU) 2018/848 and its implementing acts (2021/1698, 2021/1378, 2021/1165, etc.).
This framework replaces the previous Council Regulations (EC) No 834/2007 and 889/2008, establishing a clearer and more consistent system for defining and controlling organic production.
The objectives of organic farming, as well as the criteria determining what can be marketed as “organic,” are now more transparent and harmonised across all EU member states and third countries.
As part of the transition, the former “equivalence” regime for third countries has been replaced by the “compliance” regime, ensuring full alignment with EU organic rules.
All inspections and certifications are now managed electronically through the TRACES platform.
