EU 889/008&834/2007
Since 1.1.2009, two legal texts have replaced the old EU Council Regulation 2092/91. The EU Council Regulation 834/2007 provides the basic rules and standards, while the EU Commission Regulation 889/2008 offers more detailed content. Regulation 889/2008 is also referred to as the "Implementing Rules." Generally, references are made to 834/07 and 889/08, and the old regulation and its amendments, which were in force between 1991 and 2008, are completely invalid.
The initial changes were minimal. The major subsequent changes were due to the EU Commission updating and modifying the regulation. The main reason for the significant changes in 889/08 is that it has a clearer and more logical structure. The objectives of organic farming, which the old regulation could not fully explain, are now clearer, thus making it easier to understand what is considered 'organic' and what does not comply with these rules.
